Public Participation of Southern Portugal River Basin Management Plans

Consortia led by NEMUS recently concluded the drafting of the River Basin Management Plans (RBMP) for the regions south of the River Tagus. The documents are now being subjected to Public Participation, a step of the utmost relevance to the consolidation of the Plans.

In July, the results of the Alentejo Plans were presented and discussed in the Main Auditorium of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) in Lisbon. The Guadiana (River Basin District 7) RBMP and Sado and Mira (RBD6)RBMP are available for public participation until the end of January 2012.

The Ribeiras do Algarve (RBD6) RBMP was presented in September and public participation will run until March 19, 2012.

Still at the drafting stage, both Administrations of the River Basin Districts (Alentejo and Algarve) promoted public participation forums, embodying the will of these institutions to develop plans with strong public support. As a whole, the work conducted by NEMUS begins a new phase in water resources management south of the River Tagus, with important repercussions at regional and national level.
