{"id":1149,"date":"2014-07-23T09:21:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T09:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nemus.pt\/?page_id=1149"},"modified":"2016-10-28T14:11:41","modified_gmt":"2016-10-28T14:11:41","slug":"movimento-da-avifauna-no-novo-aeroporto-de-lisboa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nemus.pt\/en\/projects\/transportes-e-infraestruturas\/movimento-da-avifauna-no-novo-aeroporto-de-lisboa\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight patterns and movements of the avifauna at the new Lisbon Airport, Portugal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new International Lisbon Airport will be located in an extensive wide open rural area by the Tagus estuary \u2013 a protected wet land where millions of migratory birds congregate annually.<\/p>\n<p>This goal of this study was to acquire detailed knowledge of every bird\u2019s moves and flight patterns in an area comprising 700km2, throughout a whole year, to assess the potential risk of collision between birds and airplanes in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The study comprised and innovative and unprecedented mobilization of technical and human resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On site implementation of a <strong>dual radar system comprised of an S-band and an X-band radar<\/strong> (horizontal scan of 12\u00a0km and vertical scan of 3\u00a0km): continuous data logging during 365 days, 24 hours;<\/li>\n<li><strong>40 days of field work<\/strong> to visually validate the radar signals involving: 21 birds experts, 323\u00a0hours of logs in each of the 12 field observation spots;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complementary field work<\/strong> of habitats mapping and monitoring of local non-migratory birds;<\/li>\n<li>Results included : over 4,000 valid bird movements made by 40,000 birds of about 60 different species;<\/li>\n<li>The team has determined <strong>different types of flight patterns<\/strong>: diurnal\/nocturnal, seasonal, altitude related, in close association with the habitats or not related to their presence&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Final results included a qualitative <strong>assessment of the risk of collisions<\/strong> between birds and airplanes for each season (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) and a <strong>bird control program<\/strong> to minimize those risks, once the airport is built.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new International Lisbon Airport will be located in an extensive wide open rural area by the Tagus estuary \u2013 a protected wet land where millions of migratory birds congregate annually.
