NEMUS present in the organization of the 7th Congress on Planning and Management of Coastal Areas in Portuguese-speaking Countries and in the coordination of the 2nd Intensive Course on Coastal Management

Pedro Bettencourt, NEMUS’ Director General, presided (on behalf of the Portuguese Association of Water Resources) the International Organizing Committee of the 7th Congress on Planning and Management of Coastal Areas in Portuguese-speaking countries, which took place in Maputo (Mozambique) between the 27th and 30th May 2013.

This edition of the congress, entitled “A New Generation of Coastal Zone Management Plans”, occurred simultaneously with the 11th Symposium on Hydraulics and Water Resources of Portuguese Language Countries and hosted the presentation of a wide range of high technical and scientific quality communications in various fields of action, namely priorities for action in the fields of water and coastal areas; coastal zones’ governance, planning and management; engineering and coastal protection / modelling of coastal areas; climate change; risk assessment and management / biodiversity in coastal areas.

The opening of the congress was attended by Dr. Alberto Vaquina, Prime Minister of Mozambique, on behalf of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Mozambique.

The congress was preceded (24 and 25 May) by the “2nd Intensive Course on Coastal Management – Planning and Management of Coastal Areas”, which was coordinated namely by Pedro Bettencourt, Sónia Alcobia and Carlos César Jesus, from NEMUS. The course was supported by a technical, scientific and professional body of recognized merit in the areas addressed (evolution of the world’s coastal areas in the last 20.000 years; strategic environmental assessment; biodiversity in coastal areas; sustainable planning and management of coastal areas).

In addition to participation in the organization of the Congress and in the coordination of the Course, NEMUS presented several communications (both in the Congress and in the Symposium) and lectures (in the Course) and was also one of the exhibitors of the exposition dedicated to key players in the sector.
