Loureiro’s dam is one of the compensation and regularization reservoirs of the global irrigation system of the Alqueva Multipurpose Project, with energy production being one of its main objectives.
The study conducted by Nemus evaluated the environmental feasibility of the project, having in consideration the intentions of associated projects, and proposed environmental measures required to minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive effects.
Of particular interest from the study carried out in 2000 is the collection and analysis of water samples, sampling for inventory of flora and characterization of the freshwater fauna in sampling stations in Loureiro’s river. Nemus reviewed and updated the study in 2002 and a simulation was carried out regarding potential flood areas in the event of a dam rupture, in which mathematical calculation models were applied.
