The study conducted by Nemus included the environmental assessment and the monitoring plan of the wave energy plant at the mouth of the Douro River. The aim was to identify in advance and to predict the environmental risks’ mitigation of the plant’s integration project at the head of the northern pier during the construction of this infrastructure.

Focused on the descriptors geology and geomorphology, gaseous emissions, noise, ecology, flora and fauna, landscape, soil and land management, historical and cultural heritage and socio-economics, this study applied the best available methodologies, among which the acoustic study of the plant’s operating conditions stands out, supported by computer simulations.

The wave energy plant at the mouth of the Douro River aims to produce electricity from waves, using a system of oscillating water columns. It is also an opportunity for the acquisition of scientific, technological and business skills in an area of great strategic interest in Portugal.
